Reiki

A relaxing, non invasive treatment Reiki is a gentle, yet powerful hands on healing technique that works with the body’s own remarkable healing capabilities. It helps to promote and accelerate the natural healing process and restore balance on all levels, physical, mental and emotional.

Totally safe and complementary to any form of treatment, be it natural or conventional, Reiki can often be used in circumstances where other therapies may be contraindicated. Reiki can be used by anyone of any age or physical circumstance as the transmission of the Reiki energy itself is non draining and not dependent on the health or the belief systems of the practitioner. Humans, animals and plants can all benefit from the use of Reiki.

History
Introduced to the West in the early 1970’s by Mrs Hawayo Takata, no one really seems to know where Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) comes from. It is said that the techniques are recorded in very ancient Sanskrit writings, though we cannot be certain of that. More recently the knowledge we have dates from the mid 1800’s. This is when a Japanese theologian, Dr. Mikao Usui, is thought to have rediscovered a system to harness an unlimited energy potential. That system became known as Reiki.

Dr Usui opened a clinic in Tokyo and set up classes to teach Reiki. One of his teacher students, Dr Chujiro Hayashi, also opened a clinic, and it was to this clinic that Mrs Takata went to for treatment for various health problems. Inspired by her recovery she learnt Reiki and ran several clinics and taught classes in Hawaii, taking Reiki to the mainland United States in the 1970’s.

Over the years the application of Reiki has developed to meet the needs of our times, and a combination of both the personal and practical applications are incorporated in the modern version of Reiki that we practice today.

There are still some things concerning the origin of Reiki and the life of Dr Usui that remain largely unknown. What remains consistent is the increasing spread of Reiki in the West as a popular form of complementary health care. Easy to learn and simple to use Reiki is a great boon to both the lay person and practitioner.

A Reiki Treatment

A Reiki treatment lasts approximately one hour and is the physiological equivalent to 3-4 hours sleep. This makes it an excellent treatment for stress and stress related problems. (It is widely thought that 80% of all illness is due to stress!)

During a Reiki treatment hands are placed gently and passively in different positions on the body. Hands are kept still and Reiki can be given through clothing or even a plaster cast!

Case Histories and Testimonials

“Reiki was something I was somewhat sceptical about, but a friend recommended it and I gave it a try. I knew nothing about it before I had my first session so I had no preconceived ideas about what would happen. I had a problem with my neck and shoulders for some time, physio hadn’t really helped too much, also I was asthmatic, using becotine daily and my ventalin pump at least once a day.

After my 3 treatments I actually rarely use my ventalin and have ceased using becotine altogether. My neck and shoulders are much better, plus when I am suffering I find a single treatment brings me back in line. I recommend Reiki to all, not only as an aid to help problems, but as a unique way to toatally relax, learn to unwind and feel totally invigorated after each treatment ready to face what our busy day to day lives throw at us. Everyone should try it. ”

“My name is Naven Moonsamy. I am a paramedic and I work with Rescue Care Ambulance Service in Durban. One day I responded to an accident. When I got on the scene there was a lady who had head injuries, and an open fractured femur.

We had difficulty in administering IV therapy and the patients blood pressure was 80 systolic which made it necessary to put up an IV. I noticed the fractured femur but it was not bleeding badly until a policeman straightened her leg, which caused the femur to be re-inserted and leaving an open wound. The wound then started to bleed profusely, instinctively I placed my hands on her leg and within a few minutes her bleeding completely stopped and when I checked her pressure again it rose up to 100 systolic which placed her out of danger for a while until we had her in hospital.”
